About Arcadia, South Carolina
Arcadia is a community of 3,246 people in Spartanburg County, just west of the city of Spartanburg. It was founded in 1902, and it took its name from the ancient region of Arcadia because people fancied that its landscapes looked alike.
The town grew up around cotton. In 1903 Dr. Henry Arthur Ligon, a pharmacist and banker who lived from 1856 to 1925, organized Arcadia Mill No. 1 during a boom in textile mill building, and the Manning and Cleveland families of Spartanburg put up the money. The new mill started work with 12,000 spindles and about 300 looms.
- 250 bungalows by 1922On October 6, 1922, P. H. Fike of the Spartanburg Herald came to see Arcadia Mill No. 1. He found that the company had put up 250 bungalows for the people who worked there, and every one had electric lights, sewer lines and running water.
- Mayfair Mills in 1934In 1934 Joshua L. Baily, a cotton agent from New York, organized Mayfair Mills to buy both of the Arcadia plants. He kept them running through the Great Depression, so the people of Arcadia still had jobs when many mill towns lost theirs.
- Cattle from the dust bowlDuring the dust bowl years, ranchers on the Great Plains shipped their cattle to Arcadia to graze on its pastures. The drought that hurt the Plains brought some work to Arcadia, where local people were hired to look after the herds.
