About Whitney, South Carolina
Whitney is a community of 4,409 people in Spartanburg County, bordering the city of Spartanburg on its northeast side. Lawsons Fork Creek runs through it on the way southeast to the Pacolet River. Whitney grew up around a cotton mill, which the Whitney Manufacturing Company placed on the old Harris Mill site because its water power was excellent. The Census Bureau first listed Whitney as a census-designated place for the 2020 count.
- Built by Dr. Charles FlemingDr. Charles Edward Fleming practiced medicine in Spartanburg and also traded in hardware and cotton. He played a leading part in getting the Whitney Cotton Mills built, organizing the company and serving as both its president and treasurer. When he died on June 23, 1894, he was also at work on Tucapau Mills, another company he had organized.
- Three stories, 263 feet longThe Whitney Manufacturing Company started with capital stock of $193,000. Its main mill building rose three stories and measured 263 feet long by 78 feet wide.
- A school and a churchThe company housed its two hundred mill hands in about forty houses near the mill. It also built a school for the village, along with a church that an 1880s gazetteer of South Carolina described as handsome.
