About Saxon, South Carolina
Saxon is a community of 3,896 people in Spartanburg County, about 3 miles northwest of the city of Spartanburg. It was the mill village of Saxon Mills, which the Spartanburg banker John Adger Law started building and completed in 1900, when he was only 30. Before the mill, Law had helped lead the Spartanburg Savings Bank from 1891 to 1895.
- The owner who lived next doorAlmost no other mill owner chose to live inside his own mill village, but Law did. Each year he opened his home for a Christmas party, and the mill workers counted it among the best events of the season.
- A college beside the millNext to Saxon Mills stood the Textile Industrial Institute, and Law pushed for it to let students work while they studied, so that the mill would have well-trained workers. That school is now Spartanburg Methodist College, and it is in Saxon.
- 3,896 people in 2020The census counted 3,424 people in Saxon in 2010 and 3,896 in 2020, on 2.4 square miles of land in Spartanburg County.
