About Aurora, Ohio
Aurora is a city of 17,239 people in Portage County, between Akron and Cleveland, on land that was once part of the Connecticut Western Reserve. Ebenezer Sheldon, who had fought in the Revolutionary War, came in 1799, put up a cabin, and then fetched his family from Connecticut. In 1807, 72 more settlers arrived, and two years after that the town got its first frame house. Some say the name came from the daughter of Major Amos Spafford, and others credit the Roman goddess of dawn.
Inns and stores grew up where three main roads met, and James Willard Converse opened a store on Chillicothe Road in 1825. Hopson Hurd Sr. bought it in 1845 and let farmers settle their accounts with homemade cheese, which he stored in a warehouse and shipped to Cleveland, Warren and Pittsburgh. Frank and Elisha Hurd built the Silver Creek Cheese Factory in 1862, and by 1904 Aurora's factories turned out four million pounds a year, more than any other place in the country. A flood wiped out Silver Creek in 1913, Frank Hurd quit the trade in 1921, and Aurora's cheese business faded after that.
- The Chillicothe Turnpike, 1802Benjamin Tappan began the Chillicothe Turnpike in 1802 to link Lake Erie with Chillicothe, then Ohio's capital. Inside Aurora the old road bent southwest toward Hudson, and by the middle of the 1800s its Aurora stretch had shops, hotels and taverns, plus a school.
- Aurora Station, 1872The railroad station built in 1872 quickly became a busy commercial center for the town. The year after Aurora's cheese record, the town finished a stone sidewalk that ran all the way from the station to Town Center. The Aurora Train Station joined the National Register in 1986.
- A city since 1971Aurora incorporated as a village in 1929, with Lee Gould as its first mayor, and later took in the rest of Aurora Township. The population reached almost 6,500 by 1970, and Aurora became a city in 1971.
- Summers at Geauga LakeThe lake on Aurora's northern edge, first called Giles Pond, has drawn visitors since before 1887. Its amusement park's Big Dipper coaster opened in 1925 and ran for 82 years. SeaWorld Ohio opened on the Aurora side in 1970, was bought by Six Flags in 2001 and merged with the park, which closed for good in 2007. The Wildwater Kingdom water park kept going until 2016.
- Arnold Palmer's courseBert Way designed the Aurora Golf and Country Club in 1924, laying 220 acres of rolling ground along the Aurora branch of the Chagrin River. The club hosted the Cleveland Open in 1967, 1969 and 1970, and Arnold Palmer shared the course record of 64. It closed in 2012 after 88 years, and the land is now the Paddock River Preserve.
