About Belchertown, Massachusetts

Belchertown is a town of 15,350 people in Hampshire County, on the Quabbin Reservoir's western shore. Its land was part of the Equivalent Lands that Connecticut sold off, and in 1722 twelve men, seven of them Northampton farmers, bought about 8,400 acres at Cold Spring. In 1727 Connecticut sold its remaining rights to seven men from around Boston, and one of the six shares went to Jonathan Belcher, who later became royal governor. That fall Col. Timothy Dwight of Northampton surveyed the tract and counted 27,390 acres.

Settlers called the place Cold Spring, for a spring that Native people used long before it became a watering stop on the Hadley Trail, and several families lived there by July 1731. They organized a church in 1737 and began a combined church and meeting house in 1738, though money troubles held up its completion until 1746. After two decades of petitions, the plantation was incorporated on June 23, 1761, as Belcher's Town, named for the former governor, who reportedly never visited. At the first town meeting that September, voters chose a deer reeve and a hog reeve.

“No stream was bridged, no hill was graded, and no marsh drained. The path led through woods which bore the marks of the centuries, over barren hills that had been licked by the Indian's hounds of fire, and along the banks of streams that the seine had never dragged.”

  • The spring on the Bay PathThe Hadley Trail, a branch of the Old Bay Path dating to soon after 1660, crossed the Swift River from Ware, passed through the common and ran out Federal Street toward Hadley. Its travelers made the spring a favorite stop, and it gave the township its first name. The spring still flows beside Cold Spring Road, west of Sabin Street, on University of Massachusetts land, and Bay Road traces the old path for about 11 miles.
  • A $40,000 library in 1887When John Francis Clapp died, the Belchertown-born man left $40,000 to give his hometown a library. The Clapp Memorial Library, a brownstone building in the Richardsonian Romanesque style with an eighty-foot tower, was dedicated in 1887 near the common.
  • Born at Dwight in 1819Josiah Gilbert Holland was born at Dwight, in North Belchertown, in 1819. He edited The Republican and was the first to write a biography of Abraham Lincoln. "There's a Song in the Air" is a hymn he wrote, and his first novel told of life along the Bay Path that ran through his hometown.
  • Missionaries to China and KoreaElijah Coleman Bridgman was born in 1801 in the Joseph Bridgman house, a Dutch colonial gambrel that still stands at 393 Bay Road. He grew up to be the first Protestant missionary America sent to China. Mary Fletcher Scranton, a native of the town born in 1832, took her own mission work to Korea. There she started the Ewha girls' school, which grew into Ewha Womans University.
  • Land lost and regainedIn 1816 Belchertown gave up part of its eastern land to help form the town of Enfield. More than a century later Enfield was disincorporated to make way for the Quabbin Reservoir, and in 1938 its northwest corner returned to Belchertown. The reservoir's spillway now runs along part of Quabbin Hill Road on the town's side.
