About Ludlow, Massachusetts

Ludlow is a town of 21,002 people in Hampden County, across the Chicopee River from Springfield. In 1751 Joseph Miller led his family fourteen miles up the river from West Springfield, and friends at home mourned them as dead. Others followed into Stony Hill, a corner of Springfield full of swamps, wolves and bears. High water and rough paths kept them from church in town, so they asked to be set off on their own. On February 28, 1774, Governor Thomas Hutchinson put his name to the act, and on March 16 the first district meeting crowded into Abner Hitchcock's kitchen. A general act of August 23, 1775, made Ludlow a town.

The town's fortune came from the falls at Wallamanumps, where the Chicopee drops 42 feet. Abner Putnam built a scythe shop there around 1800. In 1812 Benjamin Jenks purchased the Putnam land, and in 1814 he started a cotton company, soon joined by the manufacturer Samuel Slater. Stone mills rose from 1821, the first looms ran in 1823, and the village became Jenksville, later forging gun barrels for the federal government. The company failed in 1848, and many mill girls lost their savings. George H. Deane then refitted the stone mills for jute, and in 1868 the Ludlow Company took over.

“It was a new life to Ludlow. Every farm increased in value as the factories developed.”
The History of Ludlow, Massachusetts, 1912
  • The clock tower of 1886The Ludlow Company ran the town's largest mill, spinning jute into yarn, twine and webbing. It gave its workers company housing, schools, playgrounds, a library and a clubhouse, and its mill clock tower, built in 1886, is now on the town seal. In 1893 town meeting moved down to the mill village, and in 1901 about 3,500 people came to a ball and supper to dedicate the new No. 8 mill. The Ludlow mills stopped running in the 1960s.
  • 120 men in the Civil WarIn 1861 Ludlow voted a $2,000 bounty for volunteers. Out of a town of 1,200 people, 120 men served in the war, and sixteen of them died.
  • The doctor with the yellow dogDr. Aaron John Miller, Ludlow's first physician, lived from 1750 to 1838 and spent his last days here. An 1879 history recalls a neat man dressed in the costliest black broadcloth he could buy, who spread molasses on his bread instead of butter and walked to patients with a little yellow dog. He mixed fever powders from camphor and loaf sugar. A Revolutionary surgeon, he was said to have been at the Boston Tea Party.
  • The Festa and soccerPortuguese Americans make up 21% of Ludlow, and the annual Festa at Our Lady of Fatima ranks among the most important Portuguese American cultural events in the country. The town also plays serious soccer: the high school team has won many state titles, most recently in 2018. In 1996 Ludlow earned a place in the soccer history display at the National Soccer Hall of Fame.
