About Springfield, Massachusetts
Springfield is a city of 155,929 people, set on bluffs over the Connecticut River. William Pynchon planted the settlement in 1636 and called it Agawam Plantation, and in 1641 it took the name of his hometown, Springfield in Essex, England. During King Philip's War in 1675, fire destroyed most of the settlement, and many residents lived through the attack inside John Pynchon's brick house.
In 1777 George Washington approved Springfield as the site of the country's first federal armory. Shays' Rebellion came close to seizing it in 1787, and in 1794 its shops turned out the first American musket. Springfield stayed a town for more than two centuries before becoming a city in 1852. Dr. James Naismith invented basketball here in 1891, and the armory closed in 1968, the same year the Basketball Hall of Fame put up its first home in Springfield.
“William Pynchon founded Roxbury, mother of fourteen towns, and Springfield, mother of thirteen New England towns, and god-mother to quite as many more.”
- The toll Springfield never paidBoats going up the Connecticut River owed a toll to maintain Saybrook Fort at its mouth. The Connecticut towns paid; Springfield wouldn't. In 1644 Connecticut bought the fort and the claim to the unpaid tolls, and when the United Colonies' commissioners backed Connecticut, Springfield refused again. The fight nearly broke the colonies' union, and Holland's 1855 count found the bill still unpaid two centuries later.
- America's first gasoline carIn the Stacy Building, brothers Charles and Frank Duryea put together the country's first gasoline-powered car, and they road-tested it on Springfield streets on September 20, 1893. Every one of their first Duryea Motor Wagons was made by hand in that building, which joined the National Register in 1983.
- The red house that named BrightwoodOn the north end bluff he built a Venetian red house, Brightwood, and the neighborhood took its name. After he left to edit Scribner's in New York, Wason railroad car company head George C. Fisk got it. Fisk added the Casino at Brightwood, a neighborhood show hall, in 1885.
- A mill village from 1839In 1839 Rev. Samuel Osgood and Charles Stearns formed the Indian Orchard Canal Company, buying land astride the Chicopee River for water power. Dam work began in 1845. In 1847 Rev. F. A. Barton, a Chicopee minister and engineer, took charge, grading streets and building a machine shop, the Number 1 Mill and a spur to the Western Railroad. A 1921 booklet put its growth at roughly 1,500 to 9,000 people over thirty years.
- A courthouse in Monson graniteIn 1869 a grand jury indicted the county commissioners because the old courthouse had no fireproof place to keep records. Henry Hobson Richardson designed the new Hampden County Courthouse in gray Monson granite. Work began in 1871, the building was dedicated in 1874, and it was counted the most impressive building in Springfield of that era. It joined the National Register in 1972.
