About Bloomington, California

Bloomington is an unincorporated community of 24,339 people in San Bernardino County, in the Inland Empire. Its land first belonged to a developer founded in 1887, the Semi-Tropic Land and Water Company. The company laid out four town sites: Bloomington, Rialto, Fontana and Sansevaine. Surveyors mapped Bloomington in April 1888. Valley Boulevard was its north edge and Slover Avenue its south edge. The company still exists as the West Valley Water District.

The Riverside Portland Cement Company opened a big plant in 1907 near the Crestmore Quarries, in south Bloomington. Its workers needed a way to get there, so the company laid a railroad to Riverside. The line reached Bloomington on May 20, 1911. The first neighborhood, called Crestmore, grew up there. For many years the Pacific Electric Crestmore Line ran local trains between Riverside and Rialto.

  • Still seeking cityhoodA drive to make Bloomington a city stalled in 1989 for lack of money and staff. The Bloomington Incorporation Committee tried again in 2007. That effort failed when the Local Agency Formation Commission denied it more time to raise a $109,000 deposit for studies. Activists still want cityhood. Meanwhile, Rialto, Fontana and Colton have each tried to annex parts of the community.
  • Homes against warehousesIn 2022 residents protested when the county approved tearing down Zimmerman Elementary School for a warehouse. In 2024 they protested again. County supervisors had approved warehouses that would replace 117 homes. In late September 2024 a Superior Court judge halted work on the Bloomington Business Park. The judge ruled that the county's environmental review broke state law, so the county must do it over.
  • Trains on the Alhambra lineThe Union Pacific Railroad's Alhambra Subdivision runs through Bloomington, and the town is home to a hump yard. Amtrak's Sunset Limited uses the same tracks but doesn't stop here. Riders board in Fontana.
