About Bowdoin, Maine

Bowdoin is a town of 3,136 people in Sagadahoc County. In 1752 the Kennebec Company granted William Bowdoin of Boston a stretch of land that reached from Merrymeeting Bay west to the Androscoggin River, and settlers were living on it, calling it West Bowdoinham Plantation, some years before the Revolution. After William died in 1773, the claim passed to his younger brother James, who was granting deeds by 1779.

About 121 families lived here on March 21, 1788, when the Massachusetts General Court made it a town and gave it the Bowdoin family's name. Twice it gave up land on its west side: in 1799 to form Thompsonborough, a town that took the name Lisbon in 1802, and once more in 1834, when Lisbon gained another piece. Farmers kept sheep and grew apples, wheat, hay and potatoes. The town also had a sawmill, a gristmill, a carding mill, a brickyard and an ice company, and alpaca farming arrived in 1993.

  • Named for a governor's familyJames Bowdoin, whose deeds opened much of this land to settlers, led Massachusetts as governor from 1785 to 1787. He had studied electricity alongside Benjamin Franklin, and he became the American Academy of Arts and Sciences' first president. Bowdoin College carries his name as well.
  • A church rebuilt by 1839Bowdoin's Baptists organized in 1788 and raised their first church in 1799. After fire destroyed it in 1834, a wood-frame church blending Federal and Greek Revival styles replaced it and was finished in 1839. The land later returned to the Coombs family, and in 1900 John and Viola Coombs repaired the church and family burial ground, enclosing it with a low stone wall. The First Baptist Church of Bowdoin and Coombs Cemetery joined the National Register in 1997.
  • A Bates coach from West BowdoinRoyce Purinton was born in West Bowdoin in 1877. He led the Bates College football team as captain in 1899, then returned to the college as its coach, running both football and baseball there for most of the years between 1902 and 1917.
  • Where the Cathance beginsTwo branches of the Cathance River, one from the east and one from the west, come together in Bowdoin to start the river. From there it flows 16.4 miles, by way of Topsham and Bowdoinham, into Merrymeeting Bay.
