About Bridgton, Maine
Bridgton is a town of 5,418 people in Cumberland County, in Maine's Lakes Region. The land was still called Pondicherry when the Massachusetts General Court granted it in 1768 to Moody Bridges and his fellow proprietors. Settlers arrived in 1770 and put up a tavern at today's North Bridgton. In 1779 they organized as Bridgetown Plantation, named for Bridges, and the town was incorporated on February 7, 1794.
Stevens Brook runs only a mile and a half, carrying the overflow of Highland Lake through the village, yet its fall drove 12 mill sites. Along it rose a tannery, a brickyard, a shoe factory, woolen mills, sawmills and gristmills. Once the Cumberland and Oxford Canal opened to Portland in 1832, those goods could reach outside markets, and around mid-century the town was home to about 3,000 people.
- A railroad of its ownThe Portland and Ogdensburg Railway passed Bridgton by, so the town built a 2-foot-gauge line of its own. Its trains, the Bridgton and Saco River Railroad, first arrived in the village in 1883. Summer visitors came by rail and steamboat until the Theodore Roosevelt International Highway, later U.S. Route 302, brought travelers by car after 1919. The canal steamboats stopped in 1932, and the narrow-gauge trains made their last runs in 1941.
- William F. Perry's millsPerry ran Bridgton's largest textile mills after marrying into the family of its leading mill owner. He sold cloth to the Union Army during the Civil War and invented a better turbine, which was built here and put to work in mills across Maine. In 1874 he remodeled his house at 32 Main Street, on a hill above the village, in a blend of Italianate and Second Empire styles.
- Rufus Porter's muralsThe Benjamin Cleaves House on South High Street was probably built about 1828 for a tinsmith. Painted scenes of farms and seacoast cover the walls of its hall and a parlor, dated to 1830 to 1835 and credited to Rufus Porter, the traveling painter who founded Scientific American. His story is told at Main Street's Rufus Porter Museum of Art and Ingenuity.
- A governor born in 1840Robert Andrews, a lieutenant who had fought in the Revolutionary War and came from Boxford, built his house on South Bridgton Road in 1805 and gave land and money toward the town's churches and schools. Henry Cleaves was born there in 1840 and went on to serve as Maine's governor. Nearby stands the South Bridgton Congregational Church, built in 1870 from plans by the Portland architect Francis H. Fassett.
- Maine's hottest dayNorth Bridgton, where settlement began, has been home to Bridgton Academy since 1808, at the north end of Long Lake. Dr. Samuel Farnsworth Jr. built his house there in 1825, with Federal trim unusually fine for an inland town. The state's record high temperature, 105 degrees Fahrenheit, was measured in North Bridgton.
