About Brighton, Colorado

Brighton is a city of 40,083 people and the county seat of Adams County, with 365 of its residents living across the line in Weld County. It started out as Hughes, a farming settlement that served as a depot for stagecoaches and the railroad. The Hughes post office opened on April 13, 1871, while Colorado was still a territory.

Colorado became a state on August 1, 1876. Three years later, on August 4, 1879, the Hughes post office changed its name to Brighton, after Brighton Beach in New York. The community grew into a town of its own and was incorporated on September 1, 1887.

  • County seat since 1901Brighton told the people forming a new county that it would give the land for a courthouse if it were chosen as the county seat. When Adams County was created on April 15, 1901, Brighton became its seat. The Adams County Courthouse joined the National Register in 2006.
  • Wind turbine plants in 2009Vestas broke ground on two Brighton factories on March 25, 2009. One makes wind turbine blades and the other makes nacelles. Together the plants are valued at $290 million and were planned to bring 1,350 jobs, with 650 at the blade factory and 700 at the nacelle plant.
  • Farm fresh since 1955In 1955 Brighton's chamber of commerce, which also acts as its tourism bureau, began helping small local businesses, and that opened the way for more stores and factories. Later the chamber worked to make Brighton a stop for Denver-area visitors who wanted farm fresh produce, and in May 2020 it opened the Brighton Visitors Center.
