About Thornton, Colorado
Thornton is a city of 141,867 people in Adams County, about 10 miles north of the state capitol in Denver. The Arapaho and Cheyenne peoples lived on this land long before settlers arrived, and afterward it stayed farmland for many years. In 1952 developer Sam Hoffman bought 400 acres of the Eppinger family's farm, planning a town where working families could afford a house and the community could pay its own way.
Hoffman's town was Adams County's first fully planned community, and it took the name of Dan Thornton, who was governor of Colorado at the time. New residents formed the Thornton Community Association in 1954 to steer the town's growth, and by the end of 1955 about 5,500 people lived in more than 1,200 homes. The association led the push for self-government, and Thornton was incorporated on June 12, 1956, with Oyer G. Leary as its first mayor.
- One tax for everythingThornton was the first community in the county to pay for all of its city services out of a single tax levy. That one levy covered recreation programs and even free trash pickup for every household.
- Firefighters from Rocky FlatsIn 1954 a group of Rocky Flats workers who shared rides to their jobs came up with the idea of a volunteer fire department for Thornton. One of the riders, Ken Freiberg, went on to serve as the department's first volunteer fire chief.
- Commuter trains in 2020Regional Transportation District commuter trains reached Thornton on September 21, 2020, when the N Line opened. Three of its stations are inside the city: Original Thornton/88th, Thornton Crossroads/104th and Eastlake/124th, which serves as the northern end of the line.
