About Camp Dennison, Ohio

General Scott first chose the Camp Dennison site for an army hospital. When the Civil War began, General Rosecrans oversaw its survey as a military camp. The camp had its own water system, with a pumping engine, reservoir and service mains. After the camp closed, its lead water pipes were dug up in many places.

During the Civil War, many thousands of troops gathered and were equipped at Camp Dennison. After the war closed, people decided to found a permanent village on the site. E. Campbell surveyed and platted it in 1866. A flourishing village grew up there.

  • How the town got its nameIn 1861, more than six thousand men gathered at Camp Jackson. Men from that camp were put to work building a new one. It was named Camp Dennison, after the governor.
