About Mulberry, Ohio

Mulberry is a community of 3,459 people in Miami Township, Clermont County, about 18 miles east of downtown Cincinnati. It began as two hamlets on the turnpike three miles from Milford, called Newberry and New Salisbury. They sat so close together that the 1880 county history counted them as practically one small village, and the Mulberry post office, opened in 1833, served them both and gave the community the name it carries today.

  • Newberry, laid out in 1818Thomas Shumard laid out Newberry, the older of the two hamlets, in 1818. Trade followed soon after: William McGrew is said to have opened the first store there around 1820.
  • New Salisbury, platted in 1833Thomas Combs made the plat for New Salisbury on August 22, 1833, along the turnpike just south of Newberry. The Mulberry post office began that same year, and its first postmaster was James B. Johnston. It served the joined village until it closed in 1971.
