About Carmel Valley Village, California

Carmel Valley Village is a community of 4,524 people in Monterey County, on the Carmel River about 13 miles east-southeast of Carmel-by-the-Sea. In 1839 JosΓ© Manuel Boronda and Vicente Blas MartΓnez received Rancho Los Laureles, a Mexican land grant, from Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado. The grant covered 6,625 acres along the river and the valley, including the ground where the village stands today.

In 1882 the Pacific Improvement Company bought Rancho Los Laureles. The community has never become a city. When incorporation came to a vote in November 2009, most residents voted no, so the village remains unincorporated. It grew from 4,407 people in 2010 to 4,524 in 2020.

  • A village on both banksThe Carmel River runs northwest through the village on its way to the Pacific at Carmel-by-the-Sea. The main community of Carmel Valley lies on the northeast side of the river, and Robles del Rio sits across from it on the southwest side.
  • The hybrid oak's northern limitOak woodland, riparian woodland, chaparral, grassland and savanna surround the village, and the coast live oak, Quercus agrifolia, is the most common tree. Carmel Valley is the farthest north that the hybrid oak Quercus x alvordiana grows.
  • Garland Ranch Regional ParkGarland Ranch Regional Park, run by the Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District, has its address at 700 West Carmel Valley Road, on the village's side of the valley.
