About Carrollton, Virginia
Carrollton is a community of 7,498 people in Isle of Wight County, on the west side of the James River across from Newport News. It takes its name from the Carroll family, who owned much of the land here in the 19th century, and its southern edge follows tidal Chuckatuck Creek, the line between the county and the city of Suffolk.
For most of its life Carrollton was a quiet rural place. The county's Board of Supervisors approved the Eagle Harbor subdivision in the 1970s, but its plans sat untouched until around 2000. Once building began, new neighborhoods, condominiums, schools and hospitals followed, and Carrollton grew into a bedroom community for workers across the river.
- The Carroll family homeThe Carrolls' surviving house stands where Reynolds Drive meets Norsworthy Drive, and it is said to have once held the Carrollton Country Store. It is older than the first Carrollton Post Office, which stood about 300 feet to the east on Norsworthy Drive. A local heating business now uses that old post office building, and its flagpole still stands.
- Commended by WashingtonA state historical marker recalls Parker, who fought at Trenton and Princeton in 1776 and 1777 and at Brandywine later in 1777, earning praise from Gen. George Washington. In 1781 he led the Virginia militia south of the James River, and from 1789 to 1801 he sat in Congress. His home, Macclesfield, stood nearby, and he is buried there.
- 30,000 cars a dayThe Route 17 James River Bridge lands at Carrollton and carries more than 30,000 vehicles through it each day. Many of them belong to commuters driving to and from Newport News Shipbuilding.
