About Casa Conejo, California
Casa Conejo is a community of 3,267 people in Ventura County, and its name means rabbit house in Spanish. Builders broke ground here in 1960, which made it the earliest planned neighborhood anywhere in Newbury Park.
Four years later Thousand Oaks became a city, and the newer housing tracts of Newbury Park were drawn inside its limits before they were divided into lots. Casa Conejo was left out of those limits. It is still an unincorporated county island today, ringed on every side by the city, so it sits in Newbury Park without being part of Thousand Oaks.
- Voters kept it county landDuring the 1980s Thousand Oaks annexed many of the other unincorporated islands around it, but Casa Conejo's voters turned the idea down. Instead of a city council, residents take local issues to the Casa Conejo Municipal Advisory Council, which passes its recommendations on to the county Board of Supervisors.
- About 1,000 homesCasa Conejo had about 1,000 homes in 2016, and its size has barely changed in decades. The census counted 3,286 people in 1980, 3,180 in 1990, 3,249 in 2010 and 3,267 in 2020. Locals often describe it as a close neighborhood with a small town feel.
- Along the Arroyo ConejoThe Arroyo Conejo, the longest creek in the Conejo Valley, flows west across the southern part of the neighborhood. The Ventura County Watershed Protection District manages the waterway.
