About Centerville, Ohio
Centerville is a city of 24,240 people in Montgomery County, in the Dayton area. After the Treaty of Greenville opened the Northwest Territory to settlers, three brothers-in-law from New Jersey, Aaron Nutt, Benjamin Archer and Benjamin Robbins, surveyed the site in February 1796, two months before Dayton was founded. Robbins named the place for his hometown of Centreville, New Jersey, because it sat between two rivers and near several other settlements.
Robbins brought his family up from Dry Ridge, Kentucky, on April 6, 1797, after spending ten days cutting a wagon road. His son Sam later became Centerville's first mayor. The state recognized the town in 1803, it was platted in 1805, and it was incorporated in 1830. In 1900 the Post Office changed the spelling from Centreville to Centerville, and on December 2, 1968, the town became a city.
- Ohio's early stone housesThe first settlers lived in log houses, then rebuilt in stone cut from the limestone found all around the area. During the 19th century, nearly 100 stone buildings once lined the streets and farms, and many survive. No other place in Ohio has a bigger collection of early stone houses.
- General Edmund MungerEdmund Munger, a blacksmith and farmer born in Connecticut in 1763, brought his family to Washington Township in 1799. He became a county commissioner in 1804 and township clerk from 1809 to 1826, and his militia made him a brigadier general in 1809. In the War of 1812 he was ordered to guard the frontier. He died on his farm in 1850.
- An escape from slave huntersEscape routes from the Ohio River ran north through Centerville, one from Cincinnati and another from Ripley, and the township may have held four Underground Railroad safe houses. In the late 1820s the Sunderland family took in a man fleeing slavery, and he worked on their farm. A suitor of one of the Sunderland daughters told his Kentucky owner where he was, but when the slave hunters reached the farm, he got away.
- Town Hall Theatre, 1908Washington Township built its hall downtown in 1908, and trustees met there while it also hosted community gatherings. Township offices stayed in the building until 1985. In 1989 the township turned it into a performing arts center, and work from 1992 to 1996 added an auditorium, a lobby, rehearsal space, a dance studio and a scene shop.
- Erma Bombeck's houseThe essayist Erma Bombeck lived at 162 Cushwa Drive, and the house joined the National Register in February 2015. Her nomination recalls how she got her first newspaper job while still a student: when the editor said he needed someone full time, she offered to bring in a classmate to cover the other two weeks of each month.
