About Cheshire Village, Connecticut

Cheshire Village is the center of the town of Cheshire in New Haven County, and the 2020 census counted 6,499 people here. Cheshire was a third-generation community. Its founders came from Wallingford, a town started by sons of the New Haven Colony's planters, and about 1694 they pushed west past the Quinnipiac River. They settled near a stretch of land they called "ye fresh meadows," below the Blue Hills, the range that separates Wallingford from present-day Cheshire.

“The town was named Cheshire about 1705 by Thomas Brooks, an early settler, after his birthplace in England. The Brooks name is preserved in the community of Brooksville in the southern part of Cheshire today.”
Cheshire Historic District, NRHP, 1986
  • A school by 1719By 1719 the settlers had started a school of their own, so their children no longer depended on Wallingford. It held classes for just two months a year.
  • First meetinghouse, 1724In 1724 the families built the first meetinghouse in Cheshire, giving the young settlement a place of its own to gather for worship.
  • Cheshire Academy's Episcopal startCheshire Academy began as an Episcopal school. Its founder, the Reverend Reuben Ives, was a friend of Bishop Seabury, who served as Connecticut's first Episcopal bishop.
