About Wallingford Center, Connecticut

Wallingford Center is the main community in the town of Wallingford, in New Haven County, and the 2020 census counted 18,278 people here. Its first settlers moved up from New Haven and chose a ridge over the Quinnipiac River. Their children and grandchildren never left that high ground, and over the generations they filled it with houses, stores and factories.

Those factories made the town known for silverware. Today the streets of the center form a historic district that holds colonial houses, a former high school and the homes of the families who ran the silver trade.

  • Silver since 1875In 1854 Robert Wallace and Samuel Simpson formed a partnership and put 19th-century machinery to work making Britannia ware. In 1875 the town's makers started turning out sterling silver, the product that made Wallingford famous.
  • A minister's house from the RevolutionSix houses in the old center date from colonial times. The grandest, at 104 South Main Street, was the home of the Reverend James Dana, who served as minister of the Congregational Church through the Revolutionary War.
  • Named for a signerThe old Lyman Hall High School took its name from Lyman Hall, a Wallingford native and one of the men whose signatures are on the Declaration of Independence. The Beaux-Arts building was later turned into the Town Hall.
