About Quinnipiac University, Connecticut
Quinnipiac University is a census-designated place of 3,639 people, the campus area at the foot of Sleeping Giant State Park in Hamden. The school opened in New Haven in 1929 as the Connecticut College of Commerce, after Northeastern University gave up its New Haven program as the Great Depression began. Judge Philip Troup, Samuel and Irmagarde Tator and 11 prospective students founded it.
Classes met at night in rooms on Chapel and Howe Streets, and the college enrolled 200 commuter students from around New Haven. Its first graduating class had eight members. The school became the Junior College of Commerce in 1935 and Quinnipiac College in 1951, a name that honors the Quinnipiac people who once lived around New Haven. It moved to a larger New Haven campus in 1952 and finally to the Mount Carmel section of Hamden in 1966.
- The founders' first jobsSamuel W. Tator, a business professor and politician, started the college, and Philip Troup, a Yale graduate, served as its first president until he died in 1939. Irmagarde Tator, who had studied at Mount Holyoke, kept the young school's accounts as its first bursar.
- A poll that began in classQuinnipiac's polling started informally in 1988 as part of a marketing class. In 1994 the university hired a CBS News analyst to study the results, and the poll grew from the Northeast to swing states in presidential years. Work-study students and local residents make many of its calls, and in 2017 Politico named it the leading college poll in the country.
- Hockey champions in 2023Coach Rand Pecknold's men's hockey team reached its first Frozen Four in 2013 and lost the title game to Yale, then lost the 2016 final to North Dakota. In 2023 the Bobcats beat Minnesota 3 to 2, scoring 10 seconds into overtime, and won the school's first NCAA championship in any sport.
