About Coral, Illinois
Coral was the first village in Coral Township. Its post office, set up in 1837, was the first one between Chicago and Galena. It began in William Jackson's house, and W. J. Fillmore later moved it to the village. When the railroad came, other towns were laid out, and Coral never grew much more.
William Hamilton came from Ohio in November 1835 and settled near where the village of Coral stands. He was the first settler in the township. While helping Calvin Spencer of Marengo raise a log building, he was hurt by a falling timber. He died of the injury the next spring.
