About Franklinville, Illinois

Franklinville is a crossroads community of 38 people in McHenry County, at the center of Seneca Township. Its first settler, a man the county history names only as Mr. Albro, arrived in the autumn of 1836. A small middle branch of the Kishwaukee River, which some people call Franklinville Creek, runs through the community from northeast to southwest.

Within a few years the settlers were gathering for worship. In 1839 Rev. Leander Walker led the first religious meetings at the home of G. B. Stevens, and after that he and Rev. Nathaniel Jewett took turns preaching in private homes, each coming around every four weeks. That arrangement lasted for a decade, until the Methodists built their own church in Franklinville in 1849.

  • A schoolhouse in 1845Franklinville built its first schoolhouse in 1845. It was a frame building, and it served the community for about twenty years. When the county history was written in 1885, the schoolhouse of that day stood close to the same spot.
  • The old township hallThe old Seneca Township Hall, built around 1885, still stands in Franklinville, and the Franklinville cemetery is here too. The township's offices later moved to a modern building on Garden Valley Road, a short drive west of the old crossroads, about three-quarters of a mile away.
