About Marengo, Illinois
From the McHenry County History: "Ten years ago he bought his residence and office which occupy the site of the first building erected at Marengo, which was built in 1836 by Calvin Spencer and for some years was used as a tavern."
From the History of McHenry County: "Marengo Collegiate Institute was the name of an academy, started under very promising auspices at Marengo in 1857. A building five stories high, designed to accommodate 150 students with rooms, was erected, and the school started with 115 pupils enrolled during the first year."
