About Cottondale, Alabama
Cottondale is a community of 3,130 people in Tuscaloosa County, today part of the eastern suburbs of Tuscaloosa. It grew up around a cotton mill that Baugh, Kennedy and Co. opened in 1868, and the settlement was first named Kennedale, after Joseph S. Kennedy, one of the mill's owners.
Production started fast. In 1871, three years after opening, the mill had 5,000 spindles and 100 looms at work, and it went through 1,000 bales of cotton in a single year. In 1876 the village dropped the name Kennedale and became Cottondale, after the mill that had built it.
“Little girls and boys, barefooted, walked up and down between the endless rows of spindles, reaching thin little hands into the machinery to repair snapped threads.”
- Caledonia flannels by 1904By 1904 the mill had grown to 15,000 spindles and 450 looms, and its main product was Caledonia outing flannels. Houses for the workers, four churches and two school buildings stood around it.
- The Knights of Labor arriveIn the late 1880s the Knights of Labor ran organizing drives among Cottondale's mill workers, and they won some success here.
- Mother Jones at the spindlesAfter a railroad workers' strike ended, Mother Jones came to Cottondale looking for a mill job. She had heard grim reports of small children at the machines and wanted to learn whether they held up. When she applied, the manager said he had no place for her unless her family could work as well, so she told him there were six of them. She worked in the Cottondale mills in 1904, studying how women and children labored in Southern mills.
