About Holt, Alabama
Holt is an unincorporated community of 3,413 people in Tuscaloosa County, about 3 miles east of Tuscaloosa. It began as a company village beside a foundry on the Black Warrior River. A Tennessee firm, Central Coal and Iron of South Pittsburg, chose land near Tuscaloosa for its plant, and the plant site and its village both took the name of Frank Holt, a company officer.
The plant, called the Central Foundry, was Tuscaloosa's first big manufacturing operation. At one point no other plant on earth turned out more cast iron pipe. The foundry kept Holt at work for decades, until it went bankrupt and shut down in the early 1980s.
- A railroad built in 1902In 1902 the Mobile and Ohio Railroad laid a 13-mile line to keep the Central Foundry at Holt supplied, and the track was later lengthened to 16 miles. The coal that fed the foundry's furnaces came from Kellerman.
- Pipe, fittings and brake shoesWorkers at the Central Foundry cast pipe for water and gas lines, soil pipe and fittings for plumbing and drains, and brake shoes used on locomotives and railroad cars. The plant held on through the Great Depression, then grew busy during World War II and again during the Korean War.
- 3,413 people in 2020The 2020 census counted 3,413 people in Holt, a census-designated place of 3.2 square miles in the Tuscaloosa metropolitan area.
