About Coventry Lake, Connecticut
Coventry Lake is a village of 2,823 people in the town of Coventry, in Tolland County, and its homes ring Wangumbaug Lake. The lake is spring-fed and covers about 400 acres, which makes it the largest lake in northeastern Connecticut. Today the lake shares its name with the village around it.
- Wangumbaug, the crooked pondNative Americans named the lake Wangumbaug, meaning crooked pond, because of its bent shape. At the time the name was recorded, the lake covered about 300 acres.
- The Actors ColonyIn the 1920s two vaudeville performers, Bill and Mabel Loeser, bought land beside the lake. They sold lots and put up cottages to rent. As word got around, entertainers from the big cities followed them, some for a summer holiday and some to live here for good, and the neighborhood became known as the Actors Colony.
- Dances at Lakeside ParkLakeside Park was the place for celebrations at the lake. Crowds came there for rides and boat trips, and for dances in the pavilion.
