About Danbury, Connecticut
Danbury is a city of 86,518 people in Fairfield County, on the Still River in western Connecticut. In 1685 eight families came up from Norwalk and Stamford, bought land from the Pahquioque, and called the place Swampfield because of its wetlands. The General Court gave it the name Danbury in October 1687, after the parish of Danbury in Essex, England.
During the Revolution the town held supplies for the Continental Army, so British troops under General William Tryon marched on it and reached the south end of Main Street on April 26, 1777. They burned Major Daniel Starr's house, where four men had fired on them, and rolled the pork and flour stores into the street and set them on fire. The town records burned with the town clerk's house. The city seal still carries the motto Restituimus, Latin for "We have restored."
“During the week of the fair, Danbury suddenly expands into a city twice its usual size.”
- The bullet in the graveWhile chasing the troops who had burned Danbury, General David Wooster took a bullet near Ridgefield on April 27, 1777. Carried home, he died a few days later, after a surgeon probed for the ball without finding it. In 1854 Danbury planned to rebury him beneath a new monument, but nobody knew where he lay. Diggers turned up a skull, his matted epaulet wire and a lump of clay around a large English bullet.
- How it became the Hat CityBy 1810 fifty-six shops, none with over five hands, sent rough hats to New York for finishing. Joel Taylor of Danbury devised hatters' circular dye kettle and wheel in 1823. By 1887 thirty factories made 5 million hats a year.
- The Kohanza flood of 1869The first dam on the river held back the Kohanza Reservoir to supply water for the hat industry. On January 31, 1869, the weight of ice and water broke it, and the icy flood killed 11 people within 30 minutes and did heavy damage to homes and farms.
- Union Station, 1903Alfred Hitchcock used its curved platform for scenes in Strangers on a Train. The station closed in 1993, and rail fans then formed the Danbury Railway Museum and restored it. The museum's yard keeps the only intact railroad turntable in Connecticut.
- The Danbury Fair, 1821 to 1981Danbury held its first fair in 1821, and from 1869 the fair came every year. In 1902, 63,202 people attended, more than any six other Connecticut fairs together. The last fair was held in 1981, and the Danbury Fair Mall opened on the cleared grounds in 1986.
