About Deep River Center, Connecticut

Deep River Center is the main village of the town of Deep River, in Middlesex County, and the 2020 census counted 2,765 of the town's 4,415 people living here. The village sits beside the Connecticut River, with Pratt Cove along its eastern edge, the town of Chester to the north and the town of Essex to the south.

In 1862 and 1863 a merger of ivory firms made this village and nearby Ivoryton, a village in Essex, the nation's ivory milling center. Their factories began by cutting ivory veneers for piano keys and later built whole keyboards and piano actions.

  • Up to 90 percentAt their peak, the factories of Deep River and Ivoryton handled as much as 90 percent of all the ivory brought into the United States. The work grew fast, and by 1900 the two plants employed more than 1,400 men and women.
  • Pratt, Read and CompanyDeep River's big ivory firm came together over 1862 and 1863, when George Read and Company merged with the Pratt Brothers and Julius Pratt and Company. Julius was the youngest son of Phineas Pratt. The new company, Pratt, Read and Company, was based in Deep River, and its merger turned the village into a center of the trade.
  • An opera house upstairsDeep River's town hall is a brick building three stories tall, shaped like a flatiron so it could fill a three-sided lot at the center of town. When it was built, its upper two floors held an opera house. The Deep River Town Hall is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
