About Essex Village, Connecticut
Essex Village is a village of 2,583 people along the Connecticut River, and the government offices of the town of Essex, which counted 6,733 people in 2020, are here. The village stretches from the Old Saybrook line in the south to the Deep River line in the north, and water covers about a quarter of its 5.16 square miles.
Shipbuilders worked this riverfront during the Revolution, and their yard here was one of the most important in Connecticut. In the War of 1812 the harbor sheltered privateers, and in 1814 the British sent a force upriver to destroy them. The place was still called Pettipaug at the time.
“On a cold April night in 1814 a British raiding force rowed six miles up the Connecticut River to burn the privateers of Essex, then known as Pettipaug.”
- Connecticut's first warshipThe Oliver Cromwell, the first warship Connecticut built for the Revolutionary War, came off a yard on the Essex waterfront. That yard stood across the street from the later steamboat dock, on ground that is now the lawn of the Dauntless Club. The Steamboat Dock Site is on the National Register.
- Burned out, then renamedThe British raiders of April 1814 set fire to more than two dozen American ships at Pettipaug. No other single attack in the War of 1812 cost the country so much of its shipping. Within two years the townspeople had given up the old name, and the place has been called Essex ever since.
