About Downers Grove, Illinois

Downers Grove is a village of 50,247 people in DuPage County, in the western suburbs of Chicago. Pierce Downer, a farmer born in Vermont who came west from Rutland, New York, settled here in 1832. The village took his name, along with the grove of old bur oaks that rose above the open savanna around it. Families such as the Blodgetts, Curtisses and Carpenters followed, most of them from the Northeast or Northern Europe, and they put up the first schoolhouse in 1844.

In 1864 the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad ran its new line from Aurora to Chicago through the settlement, and the population grew. Downers Grove incorporated in March 1873 and spelled its name without an apostrophe, a choice no one has fully explained. Later highways tied the village to the whole region, with I-88 arriving in 1958 and I-355 in 1989.

  • Homes on the Underground RailroadThe Reverend Orange Lyman, a Presbyterian minister, came with his wife, Maria Dewey Lyman, in 1839, and the house they built is believed to be the village's first. Israel and Avis Blodgett built their own house in 1846. Both couples opposed slavery, and both homes later served as stops on the Underground Railroad.
  • The Tivoli Theatre, 1928The Tivoli opened in 1928 with 1,390 seats, and no theater in DuPage County showed talkies before it did. Its first Wurlitzer organ gave way in 1992 to Opus 942, an instrument once housed in East Chicago, Indiana, at that city's Indian Theatre. The organ still plays as the credits begin on weekend nights.
  • The Zephyr wreck of 1947In April 1947 the Burlington's Twin Cities Zephyr, a streamlined passenger train, hit a big tractor that had slipped off a freight train. Two of its passenger cars smashed through a wall of the Main Street Station, and three people died, the engineer among them.
  • Lyman Woods kept wildLyman Woods began as ranch land. The village bought the 150 acres of oak savanna, prairie and marsh in 1987, and in 1996 residents passed a referendum to keep homes and businesses off it. More than 300 native kinds of plants and animals live there, and six of them are rare in northern Illinois.
