About Woodridge, Illinois
Woodridge is a village of 34,158 people in DuPage County, with small pieces reaching into Will and Cook counties. Housing developer Albert Kaufman did most of the work of creating it, and the village was incorporated on August 24, 1959, when fewer than 500 people lived there. Its name comes from its setting. The town sits in woods on high ground above a steep slope that locals call The Ridge, looking out over the East Branch of the DuPage River and the Des Plaines Valley.
Because the village is so young, most of its homes, businesses and churches went up after the 1950s. Three fire protection districts had already drawn their lines before Woodridge was incorporated, so the village never formed its own fire department. The Lisle-Woodridge, Darien-Woodridge and Lemont districts protect its residents instead.
- Over 8,000 public treesThe Arbor Day Foundation has named Woodridge a Tree City for 16 years running. A study done in 1996 counted more than 8,000 trees owned by the public.
- The tornado of 2021Just after 11 p.m. on June 20, 2021, an EF-3 tornado tore through Woodridge. It damaged 225 homes here and in nearby suburbs, hit the rectory of Saint Scholastica Church and knocked down the rectory's garage. Eight people went to hospitals, and nobody was killed.
- Pizza and beerWoodridge is home to the Home Run Inn pizzeria chain. The Pabst Brewing Company was also located here from 2006 to 2011.
- Early tobacco stingsWoodridge was among the first communities in the country to pass tough laws against underage tobacco use. Its police department was also among the first to run regular stings, hiring young teens to check whether stores would sell them tobacco and alcohol.
