About Dumfries, Virginia

Dumfries is a town of 5,679 people in Prince William County, at the head of Quantico Creek near the Potomac. Its history begins in 1690, when Richard Gibson built a gristmill on the creek. A customhouse and a warehouse went up in 1731, and by 1732 many more had appeared along the estuary. John Graham then gave 60 acres at the head of the harbor for a town and named it for his birthplace, Dumfries, Scotland.

After a long political fight, the General Assembly made Dumfries the first of seven townships in the county, and the town got its charter on May 11, 1749. That makes it Virginia's oldest town still holding its original charter. Tobacco poured in from the upland farms, and the town grew into Colonial America's second leading port, a rival to New York, Philadelphia and Boston. It reached its peak in 1763 and thrived for about 15 years, until the Revolutionary War, silt filling the creek and a shift from tobacco to wheat and sugar ended its days as a port.

  • Henderson House on the hillAlexander Henderson was a merchant in Dumfries while its port was booming. His home on a hill in town, the Henderson House, is still standing, and he also owned land in what is now Prince William Forest Park. His son, Archibald Henderson, went on to become commandant of the United States Marine Corps.
  • A seaport on the town sealThe town seal is framed by a ship's hawser rope and an anchor chain of the Colonial era, around a chart showing the Potomac and the Chesapeake Bay. A thistle honors the Scottish founders. A Piscataway brave stands on one side and a militiaman of 1775 on the other, from the year Colonel Henry Lee commanded the local company. The shield shows a sailing ship and a tobacco leaf crossed with wheat, the two crops that carried the town.
  • Dumfries-Triangle in 1950For the 1950 census, Dumfries and its neighbor Triangle were counted together as one community, Dumfries-Triangle. The arrangement didn't last. By the 1960 census the two were counted separately again.
