About Leesylvania, Virginia
Leesylvania is a census-designated place of 21,193 people in southeastern Prince William County, Virginia. The census area was formed in 2000 out of the southern part of Woodbridge and was first called Neabsco, for Neabsco Creek. In 2020 it was renamed Leesylvania, for the state park on its eastern border and the Lee family plantation that once stood there.
Neabsco Creek cuts through the middle of the community, and Powells Creek crosses its southern end. Both run east into the Potomac River. The land lies only 13 feet above sea level, and Interstate 95 marks the western edge.
- Iron works by 1737Iron was made beside Neabsco Creek in colonial times. The Virginia Department of Historic Resources records that the Neabsco Iron Works, along the creek near today's community, was running by 1737.
- Named for the LeesThe Leesylvania plantation stood just east of town, in what is now Leesylvania State Park. Henry Lee II, whose grandson was Robert E. Lee, lived in the house with his family in the 18th century. Enslaved Africans lived there too, and the plantation grew tobacco. Road building in the 1950s destroyed most of what was left of the foundation.
- Freedom High and a college campusFreedom High School and the Woodbridge campus of Northern Virginia Community College are both inside Leesylvania.
