About Dunean, South Carolina

Dunean is a community of 3,740 people in Greenville County, just southwest of the city of Greenville. In 1911 Ellison Adger Smythe, who had already built up the Pelzer Manufacturing Company in neighboring Anderson County, started Dunean Mill along with a village for its workers. He placed the mill on 237 acres that had been farmland and designed it to run entirely on electricity.

Smythe took the name from his own family's past. His great-great-grandfather had owned a linen mill in Antrim, Ireland, beside a river called the Dunean, and the new South Carolina mill and village carried that name across the ocean.

  • Opened April 15, 1912Dunean Mill was supposed to open with great fanfare on April 15, 1912. The RMS Titanic had sunk the day before, though, and news of the disaster overshadowed the mill's big day.
  • The first church, 1912The congregation of Dunean Baptist Church, which stands on Allen Street, came together in 1912, and its building was the first religious building put up in Dunean. A renovation in 1947 removed its towers and gave it a traditional steeple and a classical portico, with red brick covering the whole front of the structure.
  • 3,740 people in 2020The census counted 4,158 people in Dunean in 2000 and 3,671 in 2010. By 2020 the count had climbed back to 3,740.
