About Judson, South Carolina

Judson is a community of 2,352 people in Greenville County, just west of the city of Greenville, with U.S. Route 123 running along its northern edge. It grew up around a textile mill that John Irving Westervelt began building in 1911 under the name Westervelt Mills.

The firm of Lockwood, Greene, and Associates designed the plant, which was planned as the first southern operation to spin fine yarns and make linens. When it opened, 53,000 spindles and 1,200 looms were at work, and the mill went on making textiles until it closed in 2015.

  • Renamed for a teacher in 1913Bennette E. Geer's relatives were mill directors, but he himself headed the English department at nearby Furman University. The board elected him president in October 1913, and at that same meeting it agreed to rename the complex Judson Mill. The new name honored Geer's mentor, Dr. Charles H. Judson, a respected Furman educator, and the community still carries it.
  • A village nurse by 1916In April 1916 the newspaper The State described what the owners offered the people who ran the machines. A nurse looked after the mill hands and their relatives, and a teacher of home economics held classes in the village. Workers could also buy lots and put up their own houses there, paying for them over several years.
  • On the National Register in 2018Three years after the last textiles left the plant, Judson Mill was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2018, recognized for its role as the South's first mill built for fine yarns and linens.
