About East Boston, Massachusetts

East Boston was once Noddle's Island. William H. Sumner had inherited a large piece of it. By 1833 he and partners Steven White and Francis J. Oliver owned half the island, and by 1834 their East Boston Company owned all of it. They laid out a street grid, making it the first planned neighborhood in Boston.

Ferries once carried riders between East Boston and the mainland. In 1904 a streetcar tunnel under the harbor replaced them. It was the first underwater tunnel in North America, and it later became the MBTA Blue Line.

  • Sugar and shipbuildingThe Boston Sugar Refinery was the first factory in East Boston. It is credited with creating white granulated sugar. By 1835 ten wharves stood here, and shipbuilding soon became the neighborhood's most famous trade.
