About East Pasadena, California
East Pasadena is an unincorporated community of 6,021 people in Los Angeles County, in the San Gabriel Valley. In 1861 Leonard J. Rose, a Pennsylvania German, bought part of the Santa Anita grant and built it into Sunny Slope, a farm that became famous. In 1886 he laid out a town on that farm and called it Lamanda Park, joining the L of his own first name to the name of his wife, Amanda. The post office went by Lamanda Park until 1930, when it was renamed East Pasadena, though the railroad station held on to the old name.
- Chapman WoodsMuch of the Chapman Woods neighborhood lies in unincorporated East Pasadena, with some of it inside Pasadena. It takes its name from Alfred Chapman, who bought the land around it and built his house where California Boulevard meets Ivydale Court today. Signs reading "Chapman Woods" mark every way into the neighborhood.
- Peacocks on the lawnsWild peafowl roam East Pasadena and its neighbors in the west San Gabriel Valley. Their numbers grew so much over recent decades that the county's Board of Supervisors moved in 2021 to ban feeding them across Los Angeles County. Pasadena and Arcadia had already outlawed it.
- A community that shrankAs the city of Pasadena pushed its boundaries outward, it took in more and more of unincorporated East Pasadena. A separate district to the west was split off in 2010 as its own census place, San Pasqual. The count fell from 6,144 people in 2010 to 6,021 in 2020.
