About Edgewood, Washington

Edgewood is a city of 12,327 people in Pierce County, on the plateau above the Puyallup River valley that many people call North Hill. Crews began Military Road in 1858 and finished it in October 1860, making it the first road through the area. After the Homestead Act of 1862, settlers began filing claims, and William Benston claimed 100.61 acres close to today's Edgewood on March 27, 1873.

Families from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Scotland, Germany, Italy and Canada came next and cleared small farms. They milked cows, raised chickens and grew raspberries, strawberries and vegetables. Niels Jepsen, who had come from Denmark in 1883, opened the Edgewood post office on June 30, 1894. The interurban railway between Seattle and Tacoma began running in 1902 and brought new growth, and the hill finally incorporated as a city on February 28, 1996.

“Roads were not paved, and in the rainy season they became quagmires, hub-deep in mud.”

  • Named for Edgewood, MarylandWilliam G. Morse and his family claimed 160 acres on March 29, 1890, along with a lake they called Morse Lake, known today as Surprise Lake. School district No. 27 opened on January 12, 1891, in a one-room log schoolhouse on their land, and Mrs. Morse taught there. Inar W. Nyholm later said she gave Edgewood its name, after the Maryland town she came from.
  • The Nyholm Windmill, 1902Peter Nyholm, a Danish cabinetmaker and carpenter, cleared a timbered tract near today's Meridian Avenue and Jovita Boulevard. There, in 1902, he raised a four-story windmill. Its top-floor tank sent water to neighboring homes, and he did his woodcarving in a second-floor shop. The mill pumped until July 1980, and on August 24 that year it moved a little south, beside the fire department at 2284 Meridian Avenue E. It is now Edgewood's official symbol.
  • A telephone line in 1900Nyholm left Denmark in 1888 at age 27 and worked as a stone mason on the new Pierce County Courthouse in Tacoma. After he moved his family to 40 acres on the hill, he led the effort that brought the first telephone line from Tacoma to the Edgewood area in 1900. On November 28, 1906, he succeeded his old friend Niels Jepsen as postmaster.
  • Jovita, platted in 1907Edgewood grew from several small communities. Claborn Albert Stokes, one of the biggest landowners between Tacoma and Seattle, platted the Jovita town site in 1907 and named it for his granddaughter, Jovita Vallejo. Travelers from Tacoma called the area the Hill, people in Puyallup called it North Hill, and in Sumner it went by Sumner Heights.
  • A sawmill on Surprise LakeThe Stevenson brothers, from a family of 12 raised in Shelby, Indiana, arrived sometime after 1880 and bought a sawmill on Surprise Lake. Young Charles Wallace Stevenson joined them in 1889. They later moved the business to South Hill in Puyallup, logged 160 acres with donkey engines and then sold it.
