About Elk Grove, California
Elk Grove is a city of 176,124 people in Sacramento County, just south of the state capital. In 1850 James Hall opened the Elk Grove Hotel and Stage Stop for travelers going between Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area, and the town took its name from his hotel. Hall picked the name because he had found elk antlers in the nearby groves of trees, and because he had once lived in a Missouri town called Elk Grove.
A mile or so east of the stage stop, the Central Pacific Railroad's Western Division laid its tracks in 1868, and a second Elk Grove Hotel was built next to the line. Local ranchers and farmers could now ship their goods by rail, so churches and stores soon filled a new downtown. A fire in 1892 destroyed buildings and slowed the town's growth, but the town rebuilt, and in the decades after the fire it gained a bank and a post office.
“Canopies of oaks and cottonwoods, many festooned with grapevines, overhung both sides of the blue current. Birds chattered in the trees and big fish darted through the pellucid depths. The air was like champagne, and (the Spaniards) drank deep of it, drank in the beauty around them.”
- Wine grapes by the 1880sGold Rush crowds created demand for food, so families set up ranches here that raised cattle and sheep and grew wheat, barley, fruit and nuts. In the 1880s at least 35 growers were raising wine grapes. Winemaking kept growing even through the Great Depression, but after World War II many of the town's wine businesses closed.
- Reagan led the 1966 paradeThe Elk Grove Western Festival started in 1957 to celebrate the town's western roots with parades and carnival games. Ronald Reagan, who would become governor of California and then president, served as its Grand Marshal in 1966. Since 1994 the Giant Pumpkin Festival has drawn growers every autumn to show off pumpkins weighing thousands of pounds.
- A city since 2000Elk Grove stayed a small farm town long after the war. Highway 99 was expanded in 1957, building picked up, and the first shopping center opened in the early 1960s. The 1980 census counted 10,959 people, and suburbs for Sacramento and Bay Area commuters soon spread. Elk Grove incorporated on July 1, 2000, and in 2004 and 2005 it was the fastest growing city in the country.
- A casino where a mall stalledWork began on a large shopping mall in 2007, but the 2008 recession stopped it with buildings left half finished. By 2019 the shell had been torn down and the land went to the Wilton Rancheria, a federally recognized Miwok tribe. Its Sky River Casino opened in 2022 and had 1,600 employees as of 2025.
