About Emerald Lake Hills, California

Emerald Hills began as a summer resort for San Francisco families. Developer George Irvine first used the name in a 1920 brochure, but he ran short of money and lost the land. Banker Charles Holt took it over and teamed up with builder George Leonard. They lured buyers with free picnics by the lakes.

By the summer of 1927, Leonard and Holt dammed a creek to create a second lake, Upper Emerald Lake. It came with a beach, a water slide and diving platforms. The stock market crash later hit both developments hard, and the golf course was sold.

  • A landmark locals see every dayIn 1929, an outdoor amphitheater called the Easter Bowl was built, with a large concrete cross above it. Vandals later damaged the cross, and it was rebuilt at 94 feet tall. It still stands and can be seen from the highway as far south as Palo Alto. Services at the bowl ended in the early 1980s.
