About West Menlo Park, California

West Menlo Park is an unincorporated community of 3,930 people in San Mateo County. It sits between the city of Menlo Park, the town of Atherton and Stanford University. Its small shopping district lines Alameda de las Pulgas, which means Avenue of the Fleas in Spanish. Most people here just call it the Alameda. The road runs the full length of Rancho de las Pulgas, an old land grant once held by the Argüello family.

  • University Heights and Avy AvenueEugene Avy developed land near Cloud Avenue, named it University Heights and sold lots as being near the Leland Stanford University. Avy Avenue carries his name. At the same time Timothy Hopkins, the Southern Pacific Railroad's treasurer, was buying and building across San Francisquito Creek on the university's side, on a tract he called University Park and later Palo Alto. Bo Crane of the Menlo Park Historical Society tells the story in his book on street names.
  • Las Lomitas to Menlo-AthertonWest Menlo Park children begin in the Las Lomitas Elementary School District. Older students go on to Menlo-Atherton, since the whole community falls within that school's boundary in the Sequoia Union High School District. Homes here are protected by the Menlo Park Fire District.
