About Ladera, California
Ladera began as a housing cooperative formed in 1944 by people from Stanford and Palo Alto. In 1946, its 150 members bought the rest of the old Ormondale ranch. The co-op refused race limits on its deeds. But the federal government would not insure its loans, and the co-op failed.
The co-op members picked the name Ladera, which is Spanish for hillside. They chose it over Lark Hills and New Rochdale. Author Wallace Stegner and inventor Sigurd Varian were early members.
- Residents righted an old wrongAfter the co-op failed, later builders sold homes only to white buyers. In November 2021, owners of 391 of the 534 properties signed a petition. It replaced the old race clause with a statement supporting diversity.
