About Enon, Virginia

Enon is a community of 4,075 people at the eastern point of Chesterfield County, just east of Chester. It sits where East Hundred Road meets I-295, south of the Varina-Enon Bridge. Its story goes back to 1611.

That year the Virginia Company of London sent 300 musketeers up the James River. Jamestown sat among unsafe swamps, so they were told to build a new capital. Sir Thomas Dale led them ashore at what is now Enon. There they founded Bermuda Hundred, the second successful British colony in Virginia.

  • A church in the war's pathFrom 1861 to 1865, Federal armies invaded Virginia again and again. They scattered church members and wrecked the meeting houses in their way. Baptist historian Garnett Ryland named Enon's Baptist meeting house among those that Federal troops damaged or destroyed.
  • River's Bend in 1988For most of the 20th century Enon stayed rural. That changed in 1988, when work began on Rochedale Farm, an old James River plantation. It became River's Bend, an upscale neighborhood built around a golf course.
  • From farmland to factoriesIn this century, big tracts of farm and timber land at Meadowville and Mount Blanco were sold for homes and businesses. The Meadowville Technology Center now holds an Amazon.com fulfillment center, LEGO manufacturing, a Niagara Bottling plant and the Virginia IT Agency. The River's Bend Business Center is close by.
