About Exeter, Rhode Island

Exeter is a town of 6,460 people in Washington County. It runs from the Connecticut line east to North Kingstown. Long before King Philip's War, Native Americans made this land their home. Wawaloam, a woman leader who was part Narragansett and part Nipmuc, lived here during the 1660s.

In 1742 the western part of North Kingstown broke away and became a new town. It was named for Exeter, the county town of Devon in England, which is also a cathedral city.

In 2016 it received the National Medal for Museum and Library Service. By November 2024 it was moving to the University of Rhode Island in Kingston.
