About West Greenwich, Rhode Island

West Greenwich is a town of 6,528 people in Kent County, Rhode Island. It belonged to East Greenwich until 1741, when it was split off as a town of its own, and it carries the name of Greenwich in Kent, England.

The New London Turnpike, now Route 3, dates from 1815 and runs through the town. Much of West Greenwich is still woods and water: Wickaboxet State Forest, founded in 1932, covers 678 acres along Plain Meeting House Road, and the Queen River begins in Dead Swamp and flows about 10.7 miles south before it becomes the Usquepaug River in South Kingstown.

  • A meeting house for everyoneAround 1822 the Independent and Union Society put up a meeting house at West Greenwich Center that any local Christian congregation could use. People named it the Plain Meeting House for the flat "plain" around it, and the building joined the National Register in 1978.
  • Two Baptist churches become oneThe West Greenwich Baptist Church, founded in 1750, shared the Plain Meeting House with a Six Principle Baptist branch of the Maple Root church to the north, and the two were its main users. In 1868 they merged under the older church's name and kept holding Sunday services in the building well into the 1900s.
  • Stephen Allen's farmhouseStephen Allen, a farmer, built a Cape-style house around 1787 at the corner of Sharp Street and Route 102. It stands a story and a half tall and five bays wide around a central chimney, with a Greek Revival frame added later around the front door. A small building beside it, now a horse stable, may have served as a store before 1862. The Stephen Allen House joined the National Register in 1978.
  • Skiing on Escoheag HillEscoheag Hill, pronounced ES-ko-hog, rises to 560 feet inside the Arcadia Management Area. The Pine Top Ski Area opened there in the winter of 1965-66, offering skiers a pair of T-bar lifts, snowmaking and night skiing, and it kept running until about 1980.
  • Arcadia's 14,000 acresThe Arcadia Management Area stretches over 14,000 acres of West Greenwich, Exeter, Richmond and Hopkinton, the largest recreational area in Rhode Island. Hikers, riders and mountain bikers follow its old logging roads and narrow trails, and in 2011 a film crew shot part of Moonrise Kingdom there.
