About Richmond, Rhode Island

Richmond is a town of 8,020 people in Washington County, 35 miles south of Providence. Its land first belonged to Westerly, which the General Assembly of Rhode Island created out of King's County in May 1669. Westerly then split itself into four parts: Westerly, Charlestown, Richmond and Hopkinton. The Richmond area stayed Westerly territory until 1747.

The town grew as a dozen villages, from Alton and Arcadia to Woodville and Wyoming, and never had a single center. Much of Richmond is still forest. It sits away from the coast and is ringed by Exeter, Hopkinton, Charlestown and South Kingstown, so no other town in Washington County is cut off from both the ocean and every other county.

  • Carolina, named for a wifeIn 1843 Rowland G. Hazard bought a mill on the Pawcatuck River and named it the Carolina Mills Company after Caroline Newbold Hazard, his wife, who came from South Kingstown. The village around it took the name too, and its post office was called Carolina Mills until 1879. The mill switched from cotton to wool in 1862 and kept working until 1930 or 1935, depending on the account.
  • A trout farm from 1877John W. Hoxie started the Clearwater Trout Farm on White Brook, north of Carolina, in 1877, one of the first trout farms in America. Two years later his brother Charles opened a hatchery beside it. The Hazard family later ran both as the American Fish Culture Company, which was considered the largest fish farm in America by the early 1920s. In 1995 the state bought the business from the Hazard family.
  • The wreck at Richmond SwitchOn April 19, 1873, floodwater carried away a railroad bridge at Richmond Switch, the village now called Wood River Junction. A passenger train came on with no warning, left the rails and plunged into the water. Eleven people died, and others were swept downstream and never accounted for.
  • Wyoming's cotton mill of 1814Wyoming, on the Wood River, was settled in 1757, and the river's water power soon brought mills to the village. In 1814 the Brothers Cotton Mill went up on the Richmond bank. The New London Turnpike, now Route 3, reached the village in 1815, and a tavern opened that year to serve its travelers.
  • The county fair since 1970Richmond has hosted the Washington County Fair since 1970. It is the biggest fair in Rhode Island.
