About Ashaway, Rhode Island

Ashaway lies on both sides of the small river that gave it its name. Isaac Cundall ran a small mill here. For a time the village was called Cundall's Mill. About 1704, Daniel Lewis took up over 500 acres and built a house. The village grew up around his land.

The name Ashaway comes from the Native name for the local river, the Ashawague or Ashawaug. In the Niantic and Mohegan languages, it means land in the middle or land between. The name Ashawague River still appeared on an 1832 map of Rhode Island.

  • The village's long woolen tradeBy 1816 a two-story factory stood at the west end of the bridge, making narrow woolen goods. Water power ran the carding, but workers spun and wove by hand. Later the Ashaway Textile Company mill made woolen goods near the river crossing.
