About Quonochontaug, Rhode Island
About 1660, the Indians granted the Lucas Farm at Quonochontaug to Thomas Stanton. It passed as a dowry to his family's Rebecca Stanton, who married Thomas Sheffield in 1710. Six generations of Sheffields then lived on the oceanfront farm. One of them, Major Thomas Sheffield, served with the American forces in the Revolution.
In the 1880s, Thomas Edison paid for an iron mining venture at Quonochontaug. The beach held iron in its black sand. Magnets pulled the iron out so it could be melted down. The project failed once cheaper iron turned up elsewhere.
