About Farnsworth, Texas
Farnsworth is a community of 95 people in western Ochiltree County, about ten miles southwest of Perryton, the county seat. The Panhandle and Santa Fe Railway laid its tracks through this part of the county in 1919, and that same year a town was started beside the new line.
The railroad town was not the first settlement here. Ranchers came into the area in the 1880s, and the community they started nearby changed its name several times before it settled on Farnsworth at the railroad site. Its post office opened there in 1920, at an elevation of 2,995 feet.
- Olds, Nogal, then RogerstownThe ranchers' settlement was first known as Olds. When it got a post office in 1905, the office was named Nogal, and in November 1906 the name was changed again, to Rogerstown.
- Named for a railroad directorThe post office at the railroad townsite opened in 1920 and was named for H. W. Farnsworth, a director of the Panhandle and Santa Fe Railway. The town has carried his name from the day it was founded.
